- Lesson Summary
The boys are in the rocky mountains before dawn, waiting for the Romans to pass by on the road below. They carefully gather rocks to use as weapons. They also have a few spears and daggers. By the time it's light, they're all hidden and ready to fight.
Daniel hopes they can catch the Romans by surprise. He finds a place where they can put Joel once he's freed; it's difficult to get to, and the soldiers will have to come in one at a time. Nathan and Kemuel are posted there to wait until Daniel lifts Joel up to them. Daniel knows the boys will fight their best, but he worries that it won't be enough against all the Roman soldiers.

Joktan, who has been watching the road, alerts them that the Romans are approaching. Daniel whistles to alert the other boys to be ready. They wait patiently as the soldiers on horseback pass by. When the prisoners are right in front of them, they can see Joel in the line, chained to the other prisoners.
Daniel gives the signal, and the boys begin to throw rocks at the soldiers.

As the rocks rain down on them, the Roman soldiers charge up the bank to get to the boys. Daniel is upset; he didn't expect them to do this. He shouts for the boys to retreat, when a huge rock on the opposite hillside suddenly crashes down onto the soldiers. Daniel is puzzled; no one was on the other side of the hill, so who pushed the rock?
Daniel sees a shape running along the rocks; it's Samson! Encouraged, Daniel leaps down from his hiding place and stabs a Roman guard. He begins to use his chisel to break Joel's chains.

All at once, Daniel is grabbed from behind and lifted off of the ground. His head hits a rock. He feels a heavy body on top of him and legs moving around his head. Then Daniel blacks out.
When Daniel awakes, he's in pain. He sees Joel sitting near him, and Kemuel warns him not to move. Daniel suddenly remembers what's going on. He tries to get up, but the pain makes him sit back down. Kemuel tells Daniel that they think his shoulder and a few ribs are broken. Joel is unhurt.

Kemuel explains that the soldiers are gone, but they're watching for a guard. The rock that Samson pushed down killed the leader of the soldiers, and they ''never got organized again.''
Joel tells Daniel that Samson threw Daniel up to safety, then twisted Joel's chains apart with his bare hands. Samson threw Joel to safety, too. Daniel realizes that Samson was the one he felt following him when he came down off the mountain after talking to Rosh.
Daniel is upset to learn that Samson is wounded and was taken by the Romans. Kemuel tells him that Samson was badly hurt and will probably be dead before the Romans reach the coast. Daniel sees Nathan, dead, lying in a pool of blood. Joel is upset because Nathan died to save him.
The boys slowly gather together at the top of the hill, and four of them make a grave for Nathan on the cliff. Then they leave for home. They were victorious over the Romans, and Joel is free, but they realize that without Samson, they wouldn't have won the battle.
