This is part of a whole series dedicated to learn to crochet. You can see all the tutorials and articles here. If you are using US terms then this tutorial will show you single crochet and if you are using UK terms this tutorial will show you double crochet. It is so confusing that we use different terms.

This stitch is a short stitch and produces a compact finish. It is great for may projects including toys, baskets and wash cloths. It is also worth taking time to get good at this stitch as it will make it easier to master other stitches later on.

This article includes video tutorials for this stitch using both UK and US terms. Take your pick!

If you want to practice on a real project then make yourself some wash cloths. The pattern is available for free in UK and US terms by signing up to my newsletter at the top of the page or here.

Step 1 – Preparation

The first step is to get ready to do your single crochet /double crochet. You will need to use a slip knot and then crochet the required number of chain stitches that your pattern calls for. If you need help to with this then check out the chain stitch tutorial.

The main thing to focus on here is making sure that your stitches are the same size (approximately) and that they are not too tight or you will have trouble getting your hook through them.

Step 2: Forming a Single Crochet Stitch (double crochet)

Once you have a foundation chain that is the required length it is time to start your single crochet (double crochet). Skip the first chain. It does not count as a stitch. Insert your hook under the top two loops of the second chain. Some people only hook under one loop and that is okay. It is what I have done here in the pictures. Do what works for you.

Wrap the yarn around the hook from back to front. While holding the base of the chain firmly, pull the hook back through the chain stitch that you just passed the hook through, making sure that you keep the yarn over the hook. There are now 2 loops on the hook.

Now wrap your yarn around the hook a second time (from back to front) and in one smooth movement pull the yarn through both loops on the hook. You should now have one loop on your hook and a completed single crochet stitch (double crochet).

Note that the missed chain that you left at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch on its own. So do not include it in any stitch counts and do not work into it when you come back along the next row.

Keep working into all the chain stitches of your foundation row until you reach the end. If you are finding it tricky do not worry, the first row into the chain stitches is always the hardest!

Step 3: Starting a New Row

Once you reach the end of your first row turn your crochet ready to begin the next row. To start your next row you must do one chain stitch. This is called the tuning chain and brings the work up to the correct height. (When you learn other stitches you will need different numbers of chain stitches here).

Work your first single crochet (double crochet) into the top of the first stitch. Your hook should go under both strands of the v on top of the stitch. Form your stitch as you did in the first row and keep going until you get to the end of the row.

Turn and continue in the same way.

Now you can do your single crochet (double crochet) so practice it and make sure you can do it while relaxed and maintaining a good tension on your yarn.

Fabulous Project for Single Crochet / Double Crochet

A great project to practice your skills so far is make up wipes. These are so quick and easy to make and only require the skills that you have learnt in part 1 and part 2. It is so much more satisfying to be making something useful rather than just practicing.

Crochet Tips

  • Practice makes perfect!Don’t be discouraged if your first attempts aren’t flawless (they won’t be).Keep practicing, and you’ll soon find your rhythm and groove.
  • Tension is key!Aim for stitches that are consistent and not too loose or tight. Consistency is more important than a particular tension.
  • Ergonomic crochet hooks are the key to being able to relax and enjoy crocheting for longer periods of time (in my opinion).
  • Most importantly, have fun!Crocheting should be a joyful and relaxing experience. So,grab your yarn and hook, unleash your creativity, and embrace the magic of the single crochet stitch!

And next …

Well now you have the basics of crocheting and the single crochet (double crochet) stitch under your belt the sky is the limit. As I build up this learn to crochet series I will add some links for you to move onto but in the meantime simply practice and look online for more tutorials if you need them.

You could try some small crochet hearts but be warned you do need some more stitches than just this one.

Enjoy your crocheting!
