How To Crochet A Classic Granny Square

Supplies You Will Need:

Size 4.5 inches approx

Stitches Used:

Slip Stitch

Ch – Chain

Dc – Double Crochet

Sts – Stitches

Sk – Skip

Written In:

This pattern is written using American standard crochet terminology.

Notes:

  • This crochet pattern is worked in the round.
  • Turn over your granny square after each round.
  • Repeat what is in between the stars from * to * until the end of the round.
  • If you have a ** in your row you need to follow the pattern from * to * all the way around and then when you get near the end of the round you will finish your last repeat at ** because you can no longer complete the entire repeat, then follow what it says to do to complete the round.
  • Read each row carefully before starting the round.

R1. Make a magic ring, ch1 (does not count as a stitch) (Work (3dc, ch2) in ring – Repeat 3 more times, join with a slip stitch to beg dc, slip stitch into next ch2 space, fasten off, turn (x4 lots of (3dc, ch2)

R2. Join yarn in any ch2 space, ch1 (does not count as a stitch) (Work (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in each ch2 space around, join with a slip stitch to beg dc, slip stitch into next ch2 space, fasten off, turn (x4 lots of (3dc, ch2, 3dc)

R3. Join yarn in any ch2 space, ch1 (does not count as a stitch) * (Work (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in ch2 space, skip next 3dc, work 3dc in space before the next 3dc, skip next 3dc * Repeat from * to * all the way around, join with a slip stitch to beg dc, slip stitch into next ch2 space, fasten off, turn (x4 lots of (3dc, ch2, 3dc) + x4 lots of 3dc)

R4. Join yarn in any ch2 space, ch1 (does not count as a stitch) * (Work (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in ch2 space (skip next 3dc, work 3dc in space before the next 3dc) – Repeat 1 more time, skip next 3dc * Repeat from * to * all the way around, join with a slip stitch to beg dc, slip stitch into next ch2 space, fasten off, turn (x4 lots of (3dc, ch2, 3dc) + x8 lots of 3dc)

Join yarn in any ch2 space, ch1 (does not count as a stitch) * (Work (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in ch2 space (skip next 3dc, work 3dc in space before the next 3dc) – Repeat 2 more times, skip next 3dc * Repeat from * to * all the way around, join with a slip stitch to beg dc, slip stitch into next ch2 space, fasten off (x4 lots of (3dc, ch2, 3dc) + x12 lots of 3dc)

R6. Join yarn in any ch2 space, ch1 (does not count as a stitch) * (Work (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in ch2 space (skip next 3dc, work 3dc in space before the next 3dc) – Repeat 3 more times, skip next 3dc * Repeat from * to * all the way around, join with a slip stitch to beg dc, slip stitch into next ch2 space, fasten off, turn (x4 lots of (3dc, ch2, 3dc) + x16 lots of 3dc)

Weave in all ends. Move onto blocking.

Blocking:

If you are using natural fiber yarn – Soak the finished motif for 10 minutes in cool water and squeeze excess water out gently. Do not twist. Lay damp motif on blocking boards and use blocking pins to hold in place. Let your motif dry completely before unpinning.

If you are using synthetic yarn – You can steam block either with a hand steamer or the steam function of your iron by holding the steamer above your motif for a couple of seconds making sure you don’t touch the yarn otherwise it will burn.
