Homemade Rosemary Mint Shampoo Recipe - Mom 4 Real (5)

During the winter, your hair and scalp can really become dry and brittle. Most store bought shampoos contain harmful chemicals that can dry your hair and scalp out instead of helping to moisturize them when you need it most.

Homemade Rosemary Mint Shampoo Recipe - Mom 4 Real (6)

I started making this Homemade Rosemary Mint Shampoo last month to use on my daughter's long hair, and it's never looked healthier! She really suffers from an itchy scalp in the winter, and has no problems since we started using this DIY shampoo. It smells amazing and leaves her hair soft and silky without leaving it oily. We can wash her hair less often too! You only need a few ingredients to make you own...

  1. Will have to make some for hubs who always has a dry itchy scalp. Your daughter is a sweetie and I could take your dog home with me. Just kidding on the dog-napping but he is adorable.

      • Jessica, thank you, how much water do you add to make this shampoo? God bless.

        • Jessica, If I may. I have been making my shampoo for 2 years. I start with 2 cups water, add 1/2 bar grated Kirk's bar soap and dissolve in simmering water while stirring. Then add 1/2 cup coconut milk, 1 tbsp white vinegar, 20-35 drops rosemary. Kinda like your shampoo. This shampoo bubbles when washing hair. Last a long time in the shower area. No need to refrigerate because of the vinegar (preservative). I refill any empty plastic container I have. God bless.

  3. Hi! I'm a natural redhead and have very dry hair...I've had dry hair all my life and this shampoo sounds like my cure all to that! Thank you so much for sharing this! My only question is do you add water to this mixture?......... thanks!

    • Hi, Lori! I don't add water to it other than making sure my hair is really wet like I would with normal shampoo. Hope this helps!

      • When it would expire? If i make a jar, would it be ok to use for a month?

        Reply

        • It should keep for up to six weeks, sho you should absolutely be able to use it within a month.

    • Hi, Shelby! It should be more on the watery side since it doesn't contain a bunch of chemical additives. Hope this helps!

  5. I'm wondering about the quantities for this recipe. Is 10 tbsp of Baking Soda correct? It sounds like too much. Please let me know! I'd love to try this, but want to get the proportions right.

  7. This sounds perfect for me. I also got Dry Shampoo for my daughter who has oily hair. Do you have a solution for her. She only washes hair twice a week, but shampoos three times each time. If she doesn't then when hair dries, it looks like she never washed it. She has used clarifying shampoos & ones recommended by her hairdresser but they do not work. I had very oily hair into my 40s so I understand her problem. My ends would be dry and rest oily(I had long hair. She has shoulder length Bob). Now my hair is dry(60 years old). Maybe you cab help. Thanks

    • Try some arrowroot powder instead of dry shampoo. It has worked wonders for my daughter and I. We use a makeup brush set aside just for that , brush it in before bed and in the morning no white dusty look. It has absorbed the oils and hair looks nice. Good luck - T

    • Hi, Sonia! I don't add preservatives because I try to keep it as chemical free as possible. There should be no need for one if you plan on using it regularly. Hope this helps!

      Reply

    • In answer to Sonia's question about using a preservative, you could probably substitute a little Vitamin E oil in place of some of the olive oil.

  14. I tried this recipe and now my hair is all oily. Really disappointed. Not sure what went wrong? I used pure aloe vera jelly, essential oils and virgin olive oil as directed. Would be great to hear comments from others who have tried.

    • I had the same problem with my hair being super oily after using the shampoo. I'm wondering if I should leave out the olive oil completely.

    • Hi Patricia & Chels,

I have tried using sunflower oil and grapeseed oil. They tend to be less greasy. The other thing I found is that you have to REALLY rinse your hair a lot more than you would with normal shampoo. Hope this helps.

  15. Hi, I am new to this whole diy shampoo stuff and i was just wondering, do you use conditioner with this or just the shampoo? I have been on the hunt for a paroben and sulfate free shampoo that smells of rosemary for a while and whilst many made the claim i have yet to find one to deliver. Thank you so much for your answer in advance, hope to hear from you soon!

  16. I am really excited to give this a try as I have been searching the internet for the right shampoo that is a great DIY.

My one question is does this make your hair shiny???

That is one thing I have been looking for in a DIY shampoo and have been disappointed in so many others I have tried. I really love shiny hair.
Thank you for your input Jessica.

  17. Hi!! Is the rosemary a MUST? Or can I exchange it for another essential oil, like lavender? I just moved to the very dry mountain climate in Peru, I didn't bring rosemary but I have lavender... This sounds amazing.
