I grew up eating homemade pizza every Friday night. We didn’t have alot of money for takeout, but my mom made the BEST pizza, so much so, that my siblings and I always fought overwho would get to choose the first piece! This recipe is used by everyone in my family, and it’s yum! It turns out wonderful EVERY TIME!

We also use the same recipe forstromboli, and I even make rolls out of it, and they’re all delicious.

  • 2 1/2 cups warm (not hot) water
  • 1 Tablespoon (or one packet) of yeast
  • 1/3 cup of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt (now others in my family use more like 2 tsp. but Iprefer lesssalt)
  • 5 1/2 cups white unbleached flour

Step 1: Put water, yeast, sugar, oil and salt in alarge bowl, and let set for 5-10 minutes so the yeast gets activated.

Step 2: Then add 5 1/2 cups of whiteflour.

Step 3: Stir everything together with a spoon, and if it’s still kinda wet, add 1/2 cup more flour.

Step 4: Then use your hands to mix the dough. If it’s still sticky, add 1/4 cup of flour until you have a slightly “dry” dough.

Step 5: Knead for a couple ofminutes, and then form into a ball. Pour a tablespoon of oil into the bowl, and use the dough to oil the sides of the bowl. This is so it won’t stick to the bowl as it rises.

(You can use yourmixer dough hook, and mix the dough instead, but I MUCH prefer doing it by hand, because Ithink it makes the crust nice and light.)

Step 6: Cover with a clean dish towel, and put in a warm non drafty spot, and let raise for 1 1/2 hours. If you use fast-rise yeast, it doesn’t need that long.

For pizza: Spread dough in pizza pans. This amount will make 2 large thick crust pizzas or 3 thin crust pizzas.

After spreading the dough out on your pans, let it sit and raise again for an hour. Top with sauce, toppings and cheese, and thenbake in a preheated 400 degree oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the crust is lightly golden brown on top and bottom.
