ESC Cross Stitch Crochet Dishcloth Pattern (2024)

There are several reasons why this beautifully textured crochet dishcloth pattern might soon become your favorite!

One, it works up super quick and easy, which makes it a great project for relaxing. After all, isn’t that why many of us crochet? To help us unwind, and maybe even escape?

A second reason why this easy crochet dishcloth will top the others is the solid stitch pattern, which makes it durable! So the time spent making this will be well rewarded. And that alone makes this one a good choice for giving as part of a gift basket.

Third, despite the solid stitches, this crocheted dishcloth has a soft and flexible drape, which makes dishwashing all that more… I want to say enjoyable… but do we really enjoy washing dishes?

But this isn’t just for dishes! It’ll be the perfect washcloth with gently raised textures to help exfoliate your skin in the bath. Or, use it for dusting and wiping down your home.

The Size

The finished size is 9″ by 9.5″. However, as with any other crochet pattern, you can customize the size. This one is a simple multiple of 2 + 1 for the starting chains.

Make a placemat to match, a towel, floor mat or even a cozy blanket!

The Yarn

For dishcloths, I prefer to use Bernat Handicrafter, a worsted weight cotton yarn. There are many other brands that are similar and can be used instead.

For the crochet hook, I used a 6mm, which is a size larger than what is recommended by the yarn company. The larger hook helps to keep the stitches loose for a soft and flexible fabric.

The Stitch Pattern

Can you guess by looking at the images as to what the stitch pattern might be? It is so pretty, yet so simple, and is none other than the beloved cross stitch made with the extended single crochet!

For those who don’t know the extended single crochet, it is worked by making one extra chain before closing off a single crochet. This brings it up just a bit higher than the single crochet.

Also, did you know that there are three ways to make the crochet cross stitch? It’s all in the way you insert your hook when you backtrack and work into that skipped stitch.

You can insert your hook at the back of the work and work the stitch entirely at the back of the previous stitch. Or, vice versa, insert your hook at the front of the stitch and work it entirely in front.

Then, there’s the lazy way, which is to simply insert your hook from the front, yarn over at the back so that you work the stitch over the previous stitch. And that is what I did here!

Simple, easy, yet pretty enough that you’ll want to make one for everyone!
