Do you love the scents of the holiday season? Peppermint candy canes, egg nog, warm spiced ciders, and the smell of fresh greenery from Christmas trees or wreaths. Not to mention the delicious aroma of Christmas baking with the smell of sugar and spice and everything nice.

What isn’t so nice however, is the toxic chemicals found in many store-bought room sprays or air fresheners.

Why Make Your Own Holiday Room Spray?

Commercial brand air fresheners often contain numerous endocrine-disrupting chemicals and respiratory irritants.

These harmful chemicals include formaldehyde, phthalates, and 1,4 dichlorobenzene. Unfortunately, exposure to these ingredients has been linked to cancer, asthma, skin irritation, and other health issues.

Luckily, there’s better way to bring the scents of the season into your home because our DIY Christmas room sprays contain none of those toxic chemicals. Instead, we formulated these recipes with natural ingredients and scented them with essential oil blends perfect for the holidays.

However, please note that essential oil safety is important to consider before making your own Christmas room sprays with essential oils. For instance, there are some essential oils that you should avoid using around small children or pets.

Ingredients for Homemade Christmas Room Sprays

Making these Christmas scented essential oil room sprays requires only two ingredients: vodka and one of the holiday essential oil blends listed below.

For packaging, I recommend that you use a dark glass spray bottle for your room spray. A dark amber or brown glass bottle is ideal. However, a dark cobalt blue glass bottle will work as well.

The benefit of dark colored glass is that it protects the essential oils from light and UV rays. But if you don’t have a brown glass bottle on hand then it’s a good idea to store your room spray in a dark, cool cupboard away from heat or UV light.

Also, keep in mind that since essential oils and water don’t mix, your Christmas room sprays will need to be given a little shake before each use. Alternatively, you can also add a natural solubilizer which will suspend the oils in the liquid, eliminating the need to shake before spritzing.

The best choices for room spray include Poly Suga Mulse D9 and Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside. Both are naturally derived, non-toxic solubilizers that are also safe for the skin.

In terms of essential oil brands, I recommend Simply Earth essential oils for their quality, purity and affordability. You can learn more in our full Simply Earth review. They also offer a monthly essential oil recipe box. However, you can use another brand of essential oils for these recipes as well.
