25+ Fun and Free Crochet Amigurumi Patterns (2024)

What is amigurumi? It’s the art of crocheting stuffed toys! There are free crochet amigurumi patterns for pretty much everything you can think of. You can make stuffed animals, baby toys, decorations and more. If you have never made amigurumi before, then you are in for a real treat!

I love to crochet amigurumi because I find that you can really get creative with it. The only limit is your imagination! You can use any color or combinations of colors. There are no rules in the amigurumi world.

I also love that free crochet amigurumi patterns are available in a wide range of skill levels. Even beginner crocheters can make amigurumi, because many of the patterns are so easy and only require one stitch (usually single crochet). There are also more challenging free crochet amigurumi patterns for those experienced crocheters who are looking to grow their skills.

Whether you have made zero amigurumi or one hundred, you are sure to find something on this list of free crochet amigurumi patterns that will tickle your fancy. We’ve got an amazing round-up prepared for you today with a lot of variety. Get ready for cuteness overload!!

Tips for Crocheting Perfect Amigurumi

First of all, if you haven’t made ami before, you will need to get used to using a smaller hook size than usual for whatever weight yarn you are using. That is because you want the stitches to be super tight so that you don’t see the stuffing inside. I’ve used some pretty tiny hooks with DK yarn which I normally never would do, but it’s perfect for ami!

Next, learn to love and use the magic circle. I don’t know why, but it took me forever to get the hang of this!! The magic circle is a way of closing up the hole created by working into the same stitch or space on the first round. If you need help with this, please see my easy magic circle tutorial.

Use stitch markers to mark the first stitch of every round, because with this technique you won’t be joining – you’ll be working in continuous rounds. It’s very difficult to keep track of where you are if you haven’t used a stitch marker, so make sure you have some – they’re cheap!

What are the best yarns for amigurumi patterns?

You can use most any yarn for amigurumi, but you want to try and use a yarn that doesn’t split. I’ve used a yarn before that was prone to splitting, and it was such a headache.

Go for a nice cotton or acrylic yarn, although some people enjoy wool for their ami. Check out the yarns used below for inspiration.
